Man pleads not guilty to 46 abuse charges

A man facing a raft of child abuse charges has pleaded not guilty to all 46 counts and will face trial.

The man, who has name suppression, faces five charges of ill-treating a child, 17 of assault with a weapon, 14 of assaulting a child and 10 other charges.

He appeared in the High Court at Auckland and entered the pleas through his lawyer Cameron Robertson.

Justice Timothy Brewer also granted the man's application for a judge-alone trial.

He said the nature of the charges could make it difficult for a jury to consider their verdicts without prejudice.

Justice Brewer remanded the man in custody until his trial in October.
