A man appeared in court today charged with murder and attempted murder in what police described as a domestic-related homicide in Tauranga yesterday.
The local man, 41, was remanded in custody to reappear in Tauranga District Court on March 7.
He has interim name suppression until noon tomorrow.
The murder charge follows the death of Sandra Brown, 59, who died in her home in the suburb of Bellevue.
The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Todd Pearce, said another female seriously injured in the incident was being treated at Tauranga Hospital.
A third person in the house, a man, was not hurt.
Mr Pearce said the alleged offender was treated in hospital for injuries received before the incident.
With the case now before court, he said police could not provide further details about the incident, including the circumstances leading up to it, the cause of death or the injuries received.
An investigation team remained at the scene today.
While police haven't named the injured woman, The New Zealand Herald reported that it was Mrs Brown's 27-year-old daughter, Kate.
The Herald said Mrs Brown died while attempting to protect her daughter from being attacked.
