Man charged with interfering with human remains

A man has appeared in court charged with interfering with human remains.

The 24-year-old Mt Wellington man appeared briefly in Auckland District Court today where he was granted interim name suppression by Judge Ann Kiernan.

His lawyer Mina Wharepouri said his client had not been able to tell his family about the charges.

Mr Wharepouri also said the accused's father's business could also suffer if his client was named.

Judge Kiernan remanded the man in custody under the Mentally Impaired Persons Act for two weeks. She told the man he would be interviewed by health professionals.

The charge relates to a body found at a house in September last year.

The police say they believe they know the identity of the body and are in the process of notifying the person's family.

According to a statement from the police this morning, the person was not reported missing and is believed to have died sometime in 2010.
