Husband of cyclist killed in crash seeks answers

The husband of a mother-of-two struck and killed by a car while riding a bicycle in Christchurch last week is hopeful for answers on how the crash occurred.

Rochelle Margaret Roozen, 42, died after she was struck at the intersection of Marshs Rd and Springs Rd on the southern city outskirts Wednesday morning.

Detective Michael Ford of Christchurch South police said the driver was "very upset" and left the scene without giving police a full account of the incident, but came forward on Friday.

"It wasn't a hit and run. He actually did stop at the scene, and he spoke to a police officer there," Mr Ford told NZPA.

"He stated that he was in shock and he probably didn't disclose the full story."

Mr Ford said the victim's husband Andrew Roozen was hopeful the crash investigation would give him "a better picture of what actually occurred".

"He is coping, he has his ups and downs," Mr Ford said.

"He would just like to know what happened, and he's grateful that someone's come forward."

Forensic scientists and serious crash investigators will examine the car tomorrow, which would likely take the best part of a day.

"It's just like a jigsaw puzzle. It's a matter of finding those missing pieces and putting them in so you have a better picture of what's happened," Mr Ford said.

Police would like to speak with an Asian man in a small grocery or produce truck who stopped at the scene and spoke with officers.

He was believed to be in his late 30s with a moustache.

"I think it's important that we speak to everybody who was there at the time," Mr Ford said.

Police will seek a legal opinion on whether to lay charges after the investigation is complete.
