Heavy rain, gales on way for South

The MetService is warning heavy rain is possible for parts of Otago and Southland tomorrow, along with a brief bout of coastal gales.

A depression is expected to deepen rapidly in the eastern Tasman Sea later today, and cross the South Island tomorrow.

Forecasters say a frontal band is expected to wrap around the low, bringing a burst of southeasterly or southerly rain to parts of Otago and Southland. Accumulations of 50mm in 12 hours are possible.

There could also be a brief burst of severe gale force southwestly winds early on Saturday morning about the south coast from Bluff to the Otago Peninsula.
