Hoons doing burnouts in a Hawke's Bay cemetery have knocked over two headstones, and left tyre marks on the grass.

Police are looking for a blue car missing a front bumper after one was recovered at the Mangaroa Cemetery, on Mangaroa Rd in Hastings. It will be forensically examined.

Police were alerted to the damage by upset visitors to the graveyard at 1.30pm yesterday.

"This will be a very upsetting thing for anyone who has loved ones buried at the Mangaroa cemetery, and [we] would like to reassure them that we will be working hard to find the people responsible for this," Senior Sergeant David Sutherland said.

Anyone with information can contact Senior Constable Deb Potter of the Hawke's Bay Police on 06 831 0700, or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Help sought over  West Taieri vandalism

Meanwhile, Dunedin police are appealing to the public for information as they try to find whoever vandalised headstones at the West Taieri cemetery near Outram over the past fortnight.

Vandals have desecrated headstones at the cemetery, causing about $120,000 worth of damage. Up to 12 have been pushed, pulled or kicked over, and most of them were broken.

Anyone with information can ring the Mosgiel Police Station on (03) 489 3534 or Dunedin Central Police Station (03) 471 4800.
