Good conditions allow more Rena pumping

Good conditions have enabled salvage teams to continue pumping what remains of the oil off the stricken cargo ship Rena.

Teams remained on board overnight, and weather conditions remain good for the salvage operation today, Maritime New Zealand said in a statement.

They have been able to extract about four tonnes of oil an hour from the starboard number five tank onto the bunker barge Awanuia.

As of 3pm yesterday, there was still about 54 tonnes of heavy fuel oil in the tank, the most challenging tank to access.

Shoreline clean-up teams will today be working on Matakana and Rabbit Islands, as well as at Mount Maunganui and Maketu.
