The Wellington High Court was evacuated after a small fire broke out in the ceiling of the third floor early this afternoon.
Four fire appliances were dispatched after smoke filled the third floor.
The building warden John Connelly said he though the fire had been caused by some tar that ignited on the roof causing smoke to fill the air conditioning in the building.
Wellington central fire senior station officer Nick Pyatt said the fire was believed to have been accidentally caused by workmen on the roof.
"We arrived to find there had been a fire in the third floor that had been partially extinguished, our crew went up and fully extinguished it and checked in the wall for fire spread."
He said they were further checking the third floor.
