Women's Refuge is meeting police today over a decision to drop family violence figures from crime stats.
Police have told the refuge they're shifting focus to realign themselves with Australia and that family violence incidences will still be recorded - just not publicly.
Women's Refuge chief executive Heather Henare says she's been told the data police once collected is now too unreliable.
"However, that data has been collected for many years, and has informed practice and has informed action, and if necessary policy development."
Heather Henare says without it, the country could slip further and further behind others in the OECD.
Henare has been told it's so police can align themselves with Australian authorities.
She's meeting the police commissioner today to run through a few issues.
"How we can be reassured that the data is going to be available to inform things like the Family Violence Taskforce, ministerial responses, and policy development."
Henare says dropping the family violence statistic could threaten to set back this country's debate around family violence.
