A bus driver was critically injured when he was run over by his own bus outside Waikato Hospital this morning.
Police said the 52-year-old Hamilton man was trapped under the Orbiter bus which rolled about 40 metres from a bus stop outside the hospital's main entrance before crashing a pedestrian crossing pole and a give way sign about 9.15am.
There were no passengers on board.
Police spokesman Andrew McAlley said it appeared the driver had left the vehicle in gear and had tried to stop it after it rolled, but it ran him over.
The serious crash and commercial vehicle investigation units were investigating.
Fire and ambulance officers were at the scene within minutes and took the man to the hospital's intensive care unit.
