Joining forces to cook lunch for 100 elderly former red zone residents in Christchurch yesterday are (from left) All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, chef Richard Till and Young New Zealander of the Year and head of the student volunteer army Sam Johnson.

They were highlighting both the Healthy Christchurch initiative and Mr Johnson's latest venture, The Concert, New Zealand's biggest volunteering project.

On November 3, the volunteer army plans to host 10,000 young people at one of the biggest music events in Christchurch in recent years. However, the only way to get a ticket is to volunteer to work in community projects, such as helping Richard Till cook for the elderly in Avonside.

"By the time November 3 rolls around, we're aiming to have 10,000 people who have done 40,000 hours of volunteering," Mr John said.

"That's the equivalent of one person working fulltime for 20 years, leaving a massive impact on Christchurch's regeneration."

Healthy Christchurch is a Canterbury District Health Board-led initiative which aims to promote, protect and improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Christchurch.
