Christchurch transfers

While some emergency service workers are leaving Christchurch, others are trying to transfer in.

Inquiries this week showed only a very small number had transferred out of Christchurch since the quakes and most of them for family reasons.

Since February 22 two police officers had transferred to Dunedin, and one each to Timaru, Tasman and Ashburton, while a sixth request to transfer to Palmerston North was yet to be finalised, a police spokesman said. All the transfers were earthquake related.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said four firefighters were transferring out of Christchurch, two to Auckland, and the others to Tauranga and Nelson. However, four - two from Dunedin, one from Invercargill and one from Wellington - were waiting to transfer into Christchurch.

The ones leaving were mainly going for family reasons.

Firefighters always wanted to work in Christchurch, but it was perhaps for different reasons at the moment, she said.

St John regional operations manager Chris Haines said he was not aware of any staff leaving Christchurch because of the quakes, but there were plenty who had been affected by the quakes and quite a few staff had taken periods of leave since February.
