Christchurch flat residents escape fire

Residents of a central Christchurch flat have escaped uninjured during a fire that broke out overnight and gutted the building.

Emergency services received several calls about the fire at YWCA in Hereford St at 2.30am.

The fire was "well involved" when crews arrived and residents were initially thought to still be inside, said Fire Service southern communications spokesman Rewai Grace.

However, all people had since been accounted for and crews prevented the fire from spreading.

The blaze is believed to have started from a television or multibox, Mr Grace said.

Fire safety are investigating.
