A new camping ground at the Lindis Hotel Historic Reserve will be further developed as a result of new work announced as part of Vote Conservation's $424 million budget announced yesterday.

More than $5 million would be spent developing new or existing camping grounds as well as three separate cycle trails over the next year, Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson said.

About $2 million would be spent improving the range of accessible, low-cost camp sites, including developing sites at Lake Okareka near Rotorua, Okiwi and Puhi Puhi near Kaikoura and the Lindis Hotel Historic Reserve in the Lindis Valley.

Department of Conservation community relations programme manager Annette Smith, of Wanaka, said the next step in the process was to consider possible development and promotion of "this idyllic camp site".

There would be upgrades of sites at Peel Forest in South Canterbury, Uretiti at Whangarei and Maitai Bay in Northland.

"Most of the work is scheduled to be completed by next summer," Ms Wilkinson said.

Doc had also earmarked $3.3 million for three trails as part of the national cycleway network. The trails are the 75km St James trail in North Canterbury, the Central North Island rail trail and sections of the Mountain to Sea route from Ruapehu to Whanganui.
