'Bizarre' Kahui twins not taken to hospital: witness

A medical expert says it was "bizarre and unusual" that the Kahui twins were not taken to hospital after one of them stopped breathing and turned blue, despite four adults being present at their home.

Four paediatrics and pathology specialists are giving evidence at an inquest into the deaths of babies Chris and Cru, which resumed in Auckland District Court yesterday after a seven-month break.

The twins died of head injuries in Auckland's Starship Hospital in 2006.

Yesterday the court was told that the twins would have had a better prospect of survival if their father, Chris Kahui, who was in May 2008 acquitted of their murders, had acted swiftly to seek medical attention.

Mr Kahui had performed CPR on Cru after he stopped breathing and his lips turned blue, but did not take the twins to hospital until the next day.

Mr Kahui's lawyer Michele Wilkinson-Smith said there were four adults present when Cru had the seizure -- all of whom were concerned -- yet Mr Kahui said he "thought he had come right".

Dr Patrick Kelly, from Auckland's Starship Hospital, said a baby could not have returned to normality after suffering such a traumatic event.

"It is bizarre and unusual behaviour for the caregivers not to seek help, whatever their reasons were."

The panel agreed that the twins' injuries were consistent with them being "slammed" into their cot after being shaken by an adult.
