Armed police are attempting to negotiate with an armed person who has been holed up in Christchurch address for several hours tonight.

A police spokesperson earlier confirmed they are responding to the incident on Beatrice Pl, Avonhead, and "encouraging a person to come outside of the premises".

"The person is reported to have a firearm and police negotiators are in dialogue with them," police said.

They are understood to be alone in the address.

Police said they were called to the address following reports that indicated concern for a person’s welfare.

"Locals are advised to avoid the area while police resolve the situation safely and cordons are in place at the scene," police said.

Some nearby residents have also been evacuated as a precaution.

"We know this will be unsettling for the community and appreciate those following police instruction while staff respond to the situation," they said.

Earlier, a large police presence responded to reports of a shooter in west Auckland’s Hobsonville this afternoon.

"Police have been notified of a person discharging shots at an industrial building on Hobsonville Rd and are responding to the scene," NZ police said in a statement about 5pm.

Police later confirmed that a 29-year-old man has been charged with discharging a firearm in/near a place/dwelling.

He is due to appear in Waitākere City District Court on December 15.
