Armed police cordoned off a Gisborne shopping centre this morning after a man was reportedly seen loitering with a partially concealed firearm.
A witness at the shopping centre on Aberdeen Rd reported seeing the man holding what appeared to be the barrel of a gun underneath his hooded sweatshirt about 10.30am, Senior Sergeant Moera Brown said.
Police cordoned off the area and searched nearby properties but the man was not found.
He was described as Maori, about 182cm tall with shoulder length fuzzy hair.
He was wearing blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt.
Ms Brown urged Grafton Rd residents to check their properties and report anything suspicious.
