4400 new Covid cases; eight more deaths

The Ministry of Health is reporting 4400 new community cases of Covid-19, and eight more deaths with the disease.

The number is down significantly on yesterday's 6291 new cases, and is the lowest total in 102 days.

The long holiday weekend is likely to be a factor, if fewer people are being tested.

Today's case total is the lowest since February 23 when 3297 cases were reported.

There are 371 people in hospital with the disease today, including six in ICU.

The seven-day rolling average of community case numbers today is 6779 – last Sunday, it was 6904.

Of the deaths today, two were from the Auckland region, two were from Hawke’s Bay, one was from Taranaki, two were from Canterbury and one was from Nelson-Marlborough.

Two people were in their 70s, three were in their 80s and three were over 90. Six were women and two were men.

The deaths take the pandemic total to 1229, and the seven-day rolling average of reported deaths is 12. 

There are 376 new cases in the Southern DHB area, and 22 people in hospital with the virus, down from 29 yesterday. Yesterday there were 461 new cases in the South.
