Recording the music of South Dunedin proved to be a winning formula for Moemoea Records, a combined Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) from Kings and Queens High Schools.

The team of Ranui Ellison, Matt Tane, Vlad Manza and Taikawa Tamati-Elliffe last night received the Otago regional Lion Foundation excellence in business award for the YES competition.

The teachers were Joanna Bishop and Ken Bishop and the mentor was Scott Muir fromDunedin Music.

Awards co-ordinator Paul Allen, from the Otago Chamber of Commerce, said the music CD compiled by the team reflected the sounds of South Dunedin, including Pasifika, Maori and other cultures.

Moemoea Records would represent the region at the national final in Wellington on December 1 but had already won a national award, he said.

The category of the win would be announced at the national finals.

Mr Allen said the standard of entries were "exceptional" this year, and was much improvedon previous years.

"Each year we have new benchmarks being set that people try to better."

He praised the enthusiasm of the entrants. Even though there were fewer teams this year, each team made a large commitment.

For example, Otago Girls High School team 3ee was made up of two pupils who had previously competed in YES but in different teams. The girls produced a DVD on how to drive a manual car.

Awards presented last night were:

• Sustainable business award: Moemoea Records, combined Kings and Queens High Schools.

• Best marketing plan: 3ee, Otago Girls High School.

• Best design: Moemoea Records.

• Best financial performance: Choc Local, Columba College.

• Best annual report: St Hilda's Collegiate.

A special recognition award was also give to Otago Girls High School teacher Ann Babbage for her ongoing support and involvement in the scheme.
