Former world champion cyclist Alison Shanks made a quick stop at her old school in Dunedin to provide some inspiration before heading off overseas to begin training for the 2012 Olympics.

The former Queen's High School pupil (1996-2000) donated her world champion rainbow jersey to the school in a framed box with photos of her on velodrome tracks.

She said donating the jersey was a way for her to give something back to the school which had given her a lot.

"I think it's important for high school kids to get inspiration - something to aim for.

"I was encouraged to give everything a go here. Basketball, netball, athletics, Young Enterprise - you walk out as a really well-rounded student.

"Each one of them is a learning experience and you take something from each of them which shapes you as a person."

Since her days at Queen's High School, she has gone on to become World Champion cyclist in 2009, New Zealand National Road Champion in 2007, and was fourth in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and 2008 Olympic Games.

Queen's High School principal Julie Anderson was delighted and said the jersey would take pride of place in the school's foyer.
