Old bell tolls to welcome new school

The old school bell from the Waitaki Valley School of the 1940s has been restored for the new $4 million Waitaki Valley School , which was officially opened yesterday.

Early last year, pupils moved into the new school, built after about five years of debate It was due to be officially opened in September, but that was delayed by the Christchurch earthquake. Another official opening planned for February was delayed by the second major Christchurch earthquake.

Yesterday, the opening was completed by Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean, supported by Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton, principal Helen Blick, the board of trustees, architects and contractors.

The school has 96 pupils in years 1 to 8.
