The initiative by Dunedin's Spin it Wide partners is the only of its kind in New Zealand.
Council communications co-ordinator for Rugby World Cup 2011 Fiona Clarkson said a national guide had been produced, but this one focused on the six teams coming to Dunedin for the tournament.
Information about Argentina, England, Georgia, Romania, Ireland and Italy, along with a match draw and facts about Otago Stadium, were included in the booklet.
"It's part of our community engagement programme and we wanted to do something special for schools," she said.
The guide was designed to fit the curriculum, but it was up to schools how it was used.
A Spin it Wide ambassador, former Otago captain and Scottish international rugby player John Leslie, said he hoped the guide would inspire communities to adopt another country's team for the tournament.
"We are just trying to get a bit of community buzz. That's what Spin it Wide is all about - getting our community to embrace the tournament and the teams coming to town.
"As Kiwis, we are pretty last-minute, but I think it's going to be great and I'd love to see us really enjoy ourselves and enjoy our visitors."
He said the booklet being delivered to schools this week as a "really good, fun thing for the kids".
