A test match against Australia is no easy matter whatever the sport - as Otago's youth bridge team found out recently.

The team went head to head with an Australian team at the New Zealand National Congress in Hamilton this month, coming out winners.

Team member Jared Fudge said they were trailing most of the 72-hand match but then the Australian players got tired.

"We got some momentum going and people were generating."

The team of Mr Fudge, Sam Bailey and brothers James, Glenn and Sam Coutts, who are mostly students, won the game by seven "imps" (points).

That team, members of the Otago Bridge Club, plus additional players Nick Bailey and Cameron Benson, also won the youth section of the interprovincial teams' championship, winning the trophy for Otago for the first time since 2003.

Mr Fudge said the attraction of bridge was the problem solving and probabilities involved.

"There is the human factor too; it influences things as well. It's intriguing."

Otago Bridge Club president Michael Albert said club teams also took part in the open, women's, seniors and intermediate events at the congress.

The women's team also won its event and the open team was second, he said.
