Your chance to drive ‘Bluebell’

Wanted — Drivers for Bluebell.

The novelty "train", which takes passengers on trips around the Dunedin Botanic Garden, has plenty of customers but not enough conductors.

Children’s Recreational Enterprise Support Trust chairman Rodger Barrett said the group had three drivers but needed more ahead of the summer season.

"The best part about of all this is meeting the people. We get people from all over Dunedin of all ages."

The "train", a novelty vehicle dubbed Bluebell, was simple to drive and prospective conductors only needed to know how to operate an automatic car and hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence.

Volunteers did about one day a week between 10.30am and 3pm, but could do more shifts if they wanted.

"We’re especially looking for drivers now because the summer season is about to start and the cruise ships are coming back — it’s a busy time of year."

Mr Barrett said the train had operated for 32 years in the lower botanic garden and sought to enhance people’s experience while in the garden.

Prospective train conductors could provide commentary if they so wished, but just driving was also fine, Mr Barrett said.

The trust was not for profit and proceeds went to "needy children to enable them to participate in activities", such as school camps and sports groups.

Last year the trust raised almost $10,000.
