When you can be called on 24 hours a day, sleeping only when the opportunity arises, it is only fitting midwives celebrate the International Day of the Midwife with a 24-hour virtual conference.

Midwives from around Otago joined their counterparts from around the world in the Virtual International Day of the Midwife Conference last weekend to participate in online discussions and activities.

Otago Polytechnic educational facilitator and midwife Sarah Stewart said the aim of the event was to celebrate the profession and promote awareness of midwives' work.

"It is a truly unique experience."

Online resources allowed midwives to meet, communicate, share information and resources with far more flexibility, she said.

Topics of discussion included safe motherhood, antenatal education, holistic pain control and the art of midwifery.

The event attracted speakers and participants from countries including Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Pakistan, India, Mexico and Paraguay.
