Dunedin has won the right to host a conference in 2019 which should inject more than half a million dollars into the economy.
That comes after recent news of a 30% jump in the conference tourism market that earns the city about $55million a year.
The city and the University of Otago will host the 54th World Congress of the International Sociology of Sport Association in the autumn of 2019.
The conference is expected to attract up to 300 delegates to the city and will inject an estimated $525,000 into the local economy during the university's 150th anniversary celebrations.
The conference bid was presented last week in Budapest, by Otago professor Steve Jackson, and its success was revealed this week.
