WorkSafe to prosecute after fatality at brewery

WorkSafe New Zealand will launch a prosecution after the death of a Port Chalmers man at Speight's Brewery, it has been confirmed.

Ralph Ashenhurst (48), of Port Chalmers, died in Dunedin Hospital on April 2 from injuries received when he fell while working as a subcontractor at the brewery on March 31.

It is understood he was working on a decommissioned lift.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman confirmed yesterday a prosecution under the Health and Safety in Employment Act would be initiated as a result of Mr Ashenhurst's death.

The spokeswoman would not be drawn on the penalties being sought or who was being prosecuted.

Mr Ashenhurst was working as a subcontractor for Kone Elevators Australia and New Zealand at the time of his fall.

Robert Cameron, managing director of Kone Elevators Australia and New Zealand, said yesterday he could not comment as the matter was ''in the courts''.

Attempts to contact Lion Breweries - which owns Speight's - were unsuccessful yesterday.
