Work starts on first of three new playgrounds

Dunedin children will soon have three new playgrounds to tear around in.

Work had begun on the first of the three new facilities, to be built at Ocean Grove, Mornington and Bayfield parks at a cost of about $98,000 each, Dunedin City Council senior parks officer Neville Miller said.

The work was part of the council's playground improvement project, which had a budget of $295,000 this year, he said.

Earthworks to flatten the Bayfield Park site were already under way, and the new playground equipment was expected to be installed at all three sites by the end of April, he said.

The Ocean Grove playground, beside Tomahawk Rd, would include a bench seat, picnic table, combination play piece with climbing and a slide, a "bird's nest" swing and a "donkey rocker", plans showed.

The Bayfield Park playground, beside the existing car park, would in addition boast a play truck, two seesaws and a piece of "rocktopus" playground equipment.

The Mornington Park playground, beside Eglinton Rd, would have a space net and slide and a circular cycling track surrounding a mound.
