Work began this week on the final part of the State Highway 1 cycleway project, which will extend construction to the northbound lane of the highway between Queens Gardens and Albany St.
The kerb will be excavated in coming days to ready it for the new kerb placement.
An NZ Transport Agency spokeswoman said that the other three stages of the project were ''now largely complete''.
''The team is aiming to complete the cycleway for full use in December, with safety audits and further refinements, for example, changes to the traffic signal treatments.''
Two proposed Barnes dance crossings would come after that.
''We encourage people to take care on the newly completed sections in the meantime while everyone gets used to the new layouts and for drivers to be aware they should not be stopping in the cycle lanes, for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.''
The network starts at Queens Gardens and follows both one-way streets up to the Dunedin Botanic Garden.
They are meant to complement wider cycleway projects in the city.

The article quotes NZTA saying drivers "should not be stopping in the cycle lanes, for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.'' Could the NZTA clarify how drivers should use the left and right lanes that overlap with cycle ways? If the cycle way is on the left (or right) with the green paint, but overlaps with the road for left (or right) turning traffic, and there is a red light, then cars have to stop in the cycle way. E.g: The one way north and St David Street intersection.
