A woman was taken to hospital with moderate injuries after being thrown from a motorbike which crashed off the road on Otago Peninsula yesterday.

The crash occurred about 3.45pm on Portobello Rd, near The Cove.

A St John spokeswoman said the 52-year-old woman was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance for treatment of her injuries.

Emergency services used a stokes basket to retrieve the woman, who appeared unable to stand unaided, from the rocks which line the bank off Portobello Rd.

Police were unable to  say what caused the accident, but weather at the time was fine with visibility good and the road dry.

Firefighters from Lookout Point assisted paramedics in retrieving the injured woman.

The road was reduced to one lane while emergency services carried out their work.
