A man hugs a bus driver after a woman was hit by a bus in central Dunedin yesterday afternoon, suffering moderate injuries. The incident was reported shortly before 4pm in George St near the Octagon.

A Ritchies bus was pulled over to the side of the road as police interviewed witnesses and the woman was treated in an ambulance.

A police officer at the scene said the woman hit by the bus remained conscious.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said the woman was taken to Dunedin Hospital.

Comments

Not good visibility from high up buses to see pedestrians, especially those crossing with the non-Barne Dance pedestrian crossings, when buses are turning left or right .
Interesting convention in Melbourne where traffic is not allowed to overtake a stationary tram so passengers can safely get on and off while the tram remains in the carriageway and does not pull into the kerb (can’t of course because on tracks). Would mean all buses could stop at the end of every block at the lights with no need for bus stops and pulling in and out of them. No bus stops needed gives more room for car parks, loading and drop off spots.
