Woman charged after taxi assault

A woman has been charged in relation to an incident in which a Dunedin taxi driver was assaulted and robbed.

A woman is in custody charged with the aggravated robbery of a City Taxis driver in Moana Rua Rd on Saturday night.

The man was admitted to hospital after the 11.30pm incident in which he was punched in the head and robbed.

Terina Ruri (19) was denied bail when she appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on an indictably-laid charge of robbing Kenneth William McIntyre of $150 and causing him grievous bodily harm.

A 15-year-old youth also arrested yesterday was referred to youth aid for allegedly running away without paying a taxi fare, in relation to the same incident.

The arrest of the woman came as the university and police warned people to be aware of their personal safety after dark, following a series of serious assaults in the city during the past week.

Dunedin police are still investigating five other assaults from the past week, including those of three women walking alone at night.

A 21-year-old woman claimed to have been grabbed and indecently assaulted in Leith St, North Dunedin, early on Thursday; a 26-year-old woman claimed to have been grabbed and indecently assaulted in Hargest Cres, St Clair, early on Sunday and a 19-year-old woman claimed to have been grabbed while on the Otago University campus about 7pm on Monday, but managed to scare off her attacker.

Inquiries also continue into an incident in which two men were attacked by a group behind McDonalds at the weekend.

Police have urged people to be aware of their personal safety.
