Woman attacked in Town Belt

Police are looking for a man who tried to force a 25-year-old woman to the ground in Dunedin's Town Belt this morning in what they believe was a sexually motivated attack.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the attack happened near Jubilee Park about 9.40am, with the man attempting to grab the woman and force her to the ground.

The woman had parked her car on Cannongate near Serpentine Ave and walked up a track towards Maori Road and Jubilee Park.

As she was walking up she noticed a man walking towards her and he continued on down the track past her.

A few minutes later she walked back down the track and saw the man walking back towards her. He then grabbed her and pushed her to the ground and held her there for a short time before releasing her.

The man then took off in the direction of Maori Rd.

The man was described as being either a light-skinned Polynesian or a dark-skinned Caucasian, 5' 6" (155 -160 cm) tall, with short tight black curly hair. He was wearing a red and white checkered shirt and wraparound sunglasses, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

Police believe there were a number of members of public in the area at the time.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective Senior Sergeant Croudis on 4714800
