A woman has been arrested for a trio of armed robberies targeting gold, cash and cigarettes this month.

Dunedin police revealed today that the 40-year-old was arrested following the robberies of Todd Antiques and the Elgin Food Market last Friday, and the McAuliffe Jewellers on June 6.

On all three occasions a pistol was presented or threatened, police said.

Cash was taken from McAuliffe Jewellers in South Dunedin, while jewellery was stolen from Todd Antiques in Stuart St, and cash and cigarettes were taken from Elgin Food Market in Kenmure.

A member of the public pursued the woman following the Elgin Rd robbery until she pulled out the gun.

"We are extremely pleased to be able to hold this person to account," Detective Sergeant Dave Nelson said.

"Police would like to thank the public for their cooperation and assistance in helping us solve this so quickly.

"In addition to this, the quality of the CCTV and cameras throughout the city have been of great assistance in the investigation."

The woman faced three charges of aggravated robbery and would appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday.
