Wizards on ice

As summer heats up, the Dunedin Ice skating Club is returning to the rink for their traditional Christmas showcase.

Skaters across a range of abilities are lacing up for this week's show, with their own spin on the classic tale of the Wizard of Oz.

Scarecrow actor Djuna Elkan believes audiences could be surprised by the variety of local skaters hitting the ice, ranging from very young performers, through to experienced adults.

Some of the show's stars are part of a national synchronised skating team, which is preparing to represent New Zealand in Europe.

Taking part in the final rehearsal for Oz on Ice at Dunedin Ice Stadium yesterday evening are (front row from left) Zara Anthony-Whigham (22, Dorothy) and Jazmyn Evangaleou (15, Toto) and (back row from left) Hannah Sime (19, Lion) Rebekah Sime (15, Glinda), Djuna Elkan (30, Scarecrow) and Brooke Cathro (14, Tinman).

Zara Anthony-Whigham - who plays Dorothy in the show - is nervous about competing overseas, but is enjoying the theatrical side of the sport.

"The most exciting part is being able to perform to an audience", she says.

"With covid and everything, we haven't been able to do it for a wee while.  So it's great to get back out there."

The 'Oz on Ice' show is set to entertain audiences over three performances at the Dunedin Ice stadium, beginning on Friday night.
