Jacqui Gale battled in a box, got the better of a bungy cord, dressed up as Madonna, abseiled and ate offal all in the name of Fresher Comp glory.

The 18-year-old student, from Wellington, out-ate opponent Thomas Leonard-Gatland in the final event yesterday afternoon.

Faced with a plate of lung, heart, liver, eyeballs, gherkins and whipped cream, she did not hesitate and quickly took the title.

Having started with a group of nine on Monday, contestants were eliminated through a series of daily challenges.

For her effort, Miss Gale won a swag of prizes - an all-expenses-paid adventure weekend in Queenstown, a Nintendo Wii, beauty vouchers, tours around the lower South Island, a Highlanders season double pass, discount ski pass for the Remarkables and a free recreation course from the Clubs and Societies Centre.

Her favourite event of the week was the food competition because it was "delicious", while the worst was abseiling down the university chemistry building because it was scary.

"I've never done anything like this before. I just ticked a box."
