Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called following an alleged assault of a motorist in Ravenswood Rd at 8.40am yesterday.
A 38-year-old man was driving a white car up Ravenswood Rd when his vehicle and a black car driving down the road clipped each other's wing mirrors.
The driver of the black vehicle then reversed up the road and parked in front of the white car to block it from moving, Snr Sgt Bond said.
Both drivers got out of their vehicles, walked towards each other and began a ‘‘heated exchange of words.’’
The driver of the white car was threatened by the occupants of the black car who asked him whether he ‘‘wanted to fight over this?’’
As a result, one of the passengers in the black vehicle punched the white vehicle driver in the face.
They then threw him to the ground and held his head against the pavement.
The assault was short-lived and the occupants of the black car got back in and drove away.
Investigations were ongoing into the incident and police were following positive lines of enquiry.
