A windy start to spring in Dunedin brought down powerlines, trees and blew around rubbish bins.

At 5am yesterday, wind caused a small fire in Turner St, Halfway Bush.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews from Roslyn and Dunedin were called to a couple of small fires caused by power lines that had blown down.

However, the wind promptly extinguished the fires.

Crews dampened down the area to make sure all hotspots were out and worked on another small fire, which was also quickly extinguished.

Crews remained on the scene until the power authority disconnected electricity to the lines.

By noon yesterday, the Aurora Energy website said power was off for fewer than five people.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said officers were called to Quarry Rd, Burnside, at 5am yesterday after windy conditions caused a tree to fall in front of a moving vehicle.

The vehicle stopped, but the following driver collided with the first vehicle.

No injuries were reported.
