Taieri Beach School pupil Dannielle Hawkins (11) tries her hand at whitebaiting during the school’s annual whitebaiting trip to Knarston Park, at Taieri Mouth, yesterday.

While there was not enough whitebait caught to make a patty, there were plenty of crabs in the nets, which kept the pupils entertained.

The whitebait season closes in Otago today.

Comments

The reason whitebait are scarce is that they are in steady decline and heading for extinction. I'd like to urge the school to reconsider their annual whitebaiting trip. We don't hunt whales anymore and no-one would organise an annual kiwi bird hunt even if it was a "cultural tradition".
