Opening the old rail tunnel between Caversham and Kaikorai Valley to the public is part of the cycleway strategy being considered at today's Dunedin City Council meeting.

To see what work would need to be done, members of the tunnel working party and council staff walked the 865m tunnel yesterday.

They are (from left) council community adviser Paul Coffey, transportation planning manager Sarah Connolly, general manager city environment Tony Avery, working party member Kate Wilson, working party chairman John Bezett, network maintenance manager Mike Ind and Two Tunnels Trust member Gerard Hyland.
