A toast to the bride and groom and a brickbat to the thief who stole their portable sound system while they were having their photos taken.

Gareth (27) and Leslee (26) Swete, of Dunedin, were married on Saturday afternoon at Chingford Park, and while the couple were having their photos taken family members helped pack away items, including the PA system, into nearby Chingford Stables.

Between 4pm and 5pm, while the items were being stored away, the thief is believed to have entered the stables and removed the PA system before the building was locked.

When friends of the couple went to collect the sound system, which had been borrowed for the occasion, they discovered it had been stolen.

The theft "had put a dampener on what was an amazing day", Mr Swete said.

The PA system, a Mipro MA707, included a wireless microphone and a CD player, and was used for the announcements and wedding music at the service, Mr Swete said.

The system, worth $2000, was not insured.

"If anyone can help us we would really appreciate it," he said.

The couple, who have been together for eight years, would go on their honeymoon at a later date, he said.

Kaikorai Valley community constable Paul Kennedy said the system was quite distinctive and looked like a speaker on wheels with a pull-up handle and "Mipro" written in large red letters.

He said if anyone had come into possession of the PA system, or was having second thoughts, they could return the item to the nearest police station, or contact him on 479-3903.
