War in Ukraine: We will keep coming, protester pledges

For as long as the war with Russia continues, Dunedin’s Ukrainian community will be showing support for their home country.

Yellow and blue could be seen throughout the Octagon as anti-war protesters met for a third time on Saturday.

Protester Olha Viazenko said the war was not going to end immediately and they would continue protesting until the invasion was over.

It was important those back home in Ukraine knew they had support from people around the world.

"We will be here... we will keep coming."

More people were taking notice of the protests and it was a great opportunity to discuss the conflict and the history of Ukraine, she said.

University of Otago student Yen Pokusai (20) said she checked in with her family daily to ensure they were safe.

They were fleeing west to try to keep safe.

A lot of support had been shown for Ukraine, but the issue was already starting to fade from people’s minds.

It was important to keep protesting and ensure Ukraine was not forgotten about.

She hoped soon her community could gather to celebrate the end of the war instead of protesting it.
