More than 140 VWs will be in town for the annual event, being held in Dunedin for the first time since 2005, with the weekend's highlight being the "show and shine" at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sunday, Otago VW Enthusiasts Club treasurer Chris Timms said.
The cars will also join together for a rally on Saturday leaving Tahuna Park at 2.30pm and travelling down the Southern Motorway to Waihola and then back to Dunedin via the scenic coastal route from Taieri Mouth.
Mr Timms said the level of interest from VW enthusiasts around the country took the Otago club by surprise and was so strong they had to turn some people away.
Among the cars on show is local VW expert Ken Berry's 1973 VW Beetle.
Mr Berry, who is the patron of the Otago VW Enthusiasts Club, has been working on VWs of all kinds for 55 years after starting as an apprentice mechanic in 1957.
He owns six VWs, including the Beetle and a new VW Golf, and still works on VWs out of his garage in Mornington.
He had spent "thousands" of hours overhauling the 1973 Beetle, only getting it registered last December.
"I have had it since about 1990. I pulled it to bits in about 1997, it was painted in about 2000, and it's taken from then until now to get it registered and warranted." The public are invited to view the cars at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sunday from 10.30am to 3pm. Entry is by gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to the Otago Hospice.
