Car dealers are still in the dark about what to do and what to advise customers about cars caught up in the Volkswagen emissions scandal.
About 11 million cars worldwide could be affected, after manufacturers in the United States intentionally tampered with cars to cheat diesel emissions tests and make the cars look environmentally friendly.
Models affected include Jettas, Beetles, Golfs, Passats and some Audi and Skoda models with an EA189 diesel engine.
The Otago Daily Times was able to track down two dealers that had cars on their lots potentially involved in the scandal but both had been instructed not to comment.
Volkswagen New Zealand general manager Tom Ruddenklau said he ''assessed information'' that came in overnight from Germany and relayed that to dealers throughout the country.
''We've got some pretty open lines [and] we deal with [customer queries] case by case.
''We talk to them and tell them as much as we know.''
He hoped to know more in the next few days.
