The Harvest Court Mall in central Dunedin has been getting a facelift this week.
A 28m canopy facade was removed from the building in a 12-hour operation on Tuesday night.
A section of George St was closed from 6.30pm to 6am to accommodate two cranes.
The canopy was cut from the building and removed in two sections, Marca Investments Ltd spokesman Carl Angus said yesterday.
It was hoped the work would be completed by Sunday "weather permitting", he said.
The redevelopment would include restoring the frontage and adding an office development, as well as earthquake-strengthening the building.
Mr Angus paid tribute to the Dunedin City Council Heritage Trust and the Historic Places Trust, for collaborating on the project.
