Victory for OGHS in Hauraki Gulf

Competing in activities from rafting to knot tying, a group of Otago Girls High School pupils beat three other girls' schools recently to win the Spirit Trophy.

The group of 10 year 10 pupils spent five days sailing around the Hauraki Gulf aboard the Spirit of New Zealand.

They competed for points against Rangi Ruru Girls School (Christchurch), Marlborough Girls College and St Marys Diocesan School (Stratford) in various activities.

Physical education teacher Michelle Todd described it as an "amazing experience" and said the girls "did really well".

Fifteen pupils expressed interest in the voyage.

They raised funds and applied for grants in order to make the trip to Auckland, but they felt it was all worth it because as they had a lot of fun.

Their favourite activity was the "yard swing", a long rope attached to the mast from which they swung into the sea.

The pupils were: Mary Gray (14), Cleo Gilmour (14), Emma Cook (14), Laura King (15), Amber Swaney (15), Chelsea Armstrong (14), Alexia Moore (14), Heather MacLeod (15), Anja Waugh (14) and Sylvia Bloxsome (15).
