Vandals who caused more than $6000 damage to a historic rotunda in the Dunedin Botanic Garden have been slammed by the council.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said the rotunda bandstand was targeted by a one or more vandals on September 13.

The taggers operated under the cover of darkness and caused widespread damage. The cost to repair the vandalism was $6690.

The worst of the graffiti was painted over by staff on September 15, but still visible was the white outline of a person, and the words "duck, duck death".

Graffiti covered three of the walls and the floor, and the council also took the opportunity to repair earlier damage that included smashed windows and holes made in the walls and floor — damage also caused by vandals.

"Acts of vandalism create unnecessary work and stress for staff and detracts from all the good work done by staff and contractors," the spokesman said.

"Painting contractors have been on site this week to complete the works [and] the graffiti is no longer visible."

A police spokesman said police received a report of the graffiti and vandalism to the rotunda on September 13.

"Police encourage anyone who is a victim of tagging or graffiti to ensure they are reporting that to police or your local council," the spokesman said.

He said he encouraged people to consider taking prevention measures, such as ensuring areas have adequate lighting and CCTV cameras.

He also recommended large blank areas such as fences or walls have natural coverings and items that could be climbed upon be removed.

"Incidents of graffiti can be reported to police via the 105 service, or at your local police station. Anyone convicted of intentional damage could face up to seven years’ imprisonment."
