Union files on behalf of sacked bus driver

A Dunedin bus driver sacked for making an urgent toilet stop has had proceedings against Go Bus filed with the Employment Relations Authority, after Go Bus refused to attend mediation, a union secretary says.

Tramways Union national secretary Kevin O'Sullivan, of Wellington, said the union filed to the authority on Tuesday on behalf of former Go Bus driver Murray Muir, after Go Bus declined to attend a mediation service of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Mr Muir was dismissed on February 9 for using a Reading Cinema toilet while on duty on December 21 last year.

While driving a route, he found himself in urgent need of a toilet stop and drove to the Octagon and used a cinema toilet, despite an usher telling him the toilets were for customers, and to leave and use the public toilets.

Go Bus human resources manager Garth Bardsley declined to comment when contacted, saying it was a confidential employment matter.
