The bomb squad was called to remove an undetonated shell from underneath a Dunedin house yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said they responded to reports of the shell underneath a house in Corstorphine Rd about 7.40am yesterday after it was found by a resident at the property.

Police said the object, described as an "undetonated shell", was likely to have been under the house for a considerable amount of time but were unable to confirm precisely how old the suspected munition was.

A scene guard was put in place while the explosive ordnance disposal team attended.

A cordon was also put in place in the area while the shell’s removal was assessed, but this was later lifted and no nearby residents had been evacuated, the spokeswoman said.

Police referred comment to the New Zealand Defence Force, which did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.
