Dunedin auctioneer Kevin Hayward, of Hayward's Auction House, holds up a saddle, just one of nearly 200 lots punters will be able to bid on at Wednesday's police auction.

On offer will be everything from a metal detector to a baseball mitt and a solid pair of jumper leads. Mr Hayward said he hoped people in the market for bicycles would attend the auction - nearly a third of the several hundred unclaimed items that police had been unable to return to owners were bicycles, of all shapes and sizes. Mr Hayward said it was the first time he had run the police auction and there were certainly bargains to be had - all items had to go and there were no reserve prices.
